Early Life

Shaq was born on March 6 th 1972, in Newark, New Jersey. He was born to Lucille O'Neal and Joe Toney, his father struggled with drug addiction and was imprisoned when Shaq was an infant.

O'Neal came from a tall family. His father and mother were 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) and 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) tall, respectively, and by age 13, O'Neal was already a whopping 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) tall. He always gives credit to Boys and Girls Club America,"It gave me something to do," he said. "I'd just go there to shoot. I didn't even play on a team." Because of his stepfather's military career , the family often moved, they were in Germany and finally settled in San Antonio Texas. In a matter of three years he grew 4 inches to a bigger frame of 6 ft 10 in (2.08). he began playing basketball at Robert G. Cole High School. He led his team to a 68–1 record over two years and helped the team win the state championship during his senior year.

Shaq studied business at Louisiana State University (LSU). He had met coach Dale Brown years earlier in Europe when O'Neal's stepfather was stationed on a U.S. Army base in West Germany. While playing at LSU, O'Neal was a two-time All-American, two-time SEC Player of the Year, and received the Adolph Rupp Trophy as NCAA men's basketball player of the year in 1991; Shaq left LSU early to pursue his NBA career but did not forget his degree went on to continue his studies even after becoming a professional player. He was later inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame. A 900-pound bronze Shaq statue is in front of the LSU Basketball Practice Facility.

In his third season, he went on to win the NBA scoring title and came in a close second to MVP David Robinson of the Spurs. He was scoring at 29.3% and welcomed his third All Star selection and All Nba third team. This time he would not be denied a trip to the finals, the Magic won their first ever playoff title by beating the Celtics in 1995. They went to beat the Bulls, they won their first ever finals berth by Beating Reggie Miller and the Pacers. But the Duo of Future Hall Of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler swept them in four games. Shaq was injured for 28 games during the 95-96 season, but still made the All Star Team. The Magic were no match to the Mighty Chicago Bulls and Shaq became a free agent after this season.
