Historically, the Memphis Grizzlies was known as the Vancouver Grizzlies since it was originally founded in Vancouver, British Columbia. The franchise was established along with the Toronto Raptors in an effort to extend the NBA in Canada. The original name proposed for the team was the Vancouver Mounties. But it was dropped following objections from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the ‘Grizzlies’ was selected after a type of bear in BC.

Further, the franchise wrote to the NBA about their relocation to Memphis in March 2001. The NBA accepted the request in July and the team moved to Memphis and renamed the Memphis Grizzlies.
