The New York Knicks are an American Basketball team competing in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division of the NBA. The Knicks were founded in 1946 and play their home games at Madison Square Garden. The New York Knicks have won two NBA Championships - in 1970 and 1973.

Knicks History

The Knicks drafted Wills Reed in 1964 and he was named Rookie of the Year in his rookie season, though the Knicks failed to make the Playoffs. In 1967, another rookie Walt Frazier made his debut for the Knicks and with the help of Reed and Frazier, the Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1969-70 beating the Los Angeles Lakers in a closely contested Finals series. In 1972, the Knicks acquired Earl Monroe and he along with Wills Reed was instrumental in the Knicks' title winning campaign in 1972-73. The New York Knicks have won 8 Conference titles with the last one in 1999. Some of the prominent players to have played for the New York Knicks include Walt Frazier, Wills Reed, Earl Monroe, Carmelo Anthony, and Patrick Ewing.

Knicks in Recent Years

New York is known as the place where basketball originated and Madison Square Garden is known as the “Mecca of basketball”. This is ironic due to the fact that prior to the 2020-2021 NBA Season, the Knicks hadn’t made the playoffs since 2013. A combination of poor contracts, bad selections in the draft, and just overall mismanagement during the 2010s had led to a downfall of the basket balling giant.

Their rebuilding process had lasted eight years and they had five different head coaches. Carmelo Anthony was forced to play on a losing team due to a ‘no-trade’ clause in his contract. The overall environment at the organisation was toxic.

They finally were able to trade Melo to the OKC Thunder. Porziņģis had a breakout year but got injured and in the 2018-2019 season he was traded due to tension with front office. The Knicks used their cap space to sign several players, with only Taj Gibson and Julius Randle remaining out of the players signed in the 2019 offseason. After the completion of another losing season, the Knicks hired Tom Thibodeau in the 2020 offseason to set a basketball culture which had been lacking for so many seasons.

He ended up leading the Knicks to the playoffs after eight seasons and won the Coach of the Year award. Julius Randle had a breakout year and was named the Most Improved Player of the Year.

With the addition of Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker, the Knicks look to make it past the first round and erase the memories of the 2010s by having a successful decade in the 2020s.
