Indian boxers bring back 13 medals from Belgrade International Championship 2018

What's the story?

Indian boxers did the nation proud after clinching gold medals at the Belgrade International Boxing Championship on Sunday. Sumit Sangwan and Nikhat Zareen bagged golds in their respective categories and were amongst the three gold medalists in the boxing tournament. The third gold was bagged by boxer Himanshu Sharma.

The Indian boxers brought home three gold, five silver and five bronze medals collectively.

In case you didn't know...

The Belgrade International Boxing Championship is the 56th edition of the tournament. It was held at Belgrade in Serbia between 24th - 29th April 2018.

The heart of the matter

Sumit Sangwan (91Kg), Asia's silver medallist, made a fine comeback after a wrist injury to bag his gold. He defeated Castillo Torres of Ecuador via a 5-0 verdict to clinch the top position.

Amongst the women boxers was youngster Nikhat Zareen (51 Kg) who defeated Koutsoeorgopoulou Aikaterini of Greece. The former junior world champion also bagged her gold after recovering from a shoulder injury. She too ended her match with a 5-0 win.

Himanshu Sharma (49 Kg) was also one of the gold medalists who defeated Mohammed Touareg of Algeria 5-0.

Besides the gold medals, the Indian boxers also did the country proud by bagging silver medals. Amongst the women boxers were Jamuna Boro (54 Kg) and Ralte Lalfakmawii (+81kg). Lalfakmawii lost 2-3 to Demir Sennur of Turkey, while Boro won her silver after being defeated by Andjela Brankovic 1-4.

Laldinmawia (52kg), Pawan Kumar (69kg) and Varinder Singh (56kg) clinched silvers in the men's draw. Pawan lost 1-4 to Croatia’s Petar Cetinic, while Varinder was defeated 2-3 to Brazil's Arilson Goncalves. Laldinmawia lost to Korea’s Kim Inkyn 0-5.

Narinder, on the other hand, claimed the bronze medal in the men's competition, while Rumi Gogoi (75kg), Priyanka Thakur (60kg) and Nirmala Rawat (81kg) settled for bronze medals in the women's division.

What's next?

After having an impressive and very successful bout at Belgrade, it will be interesting to see these youngsters shine in the following tournaments to come.

The Indian sportspersons have been doing well in all sectors this year and here's hoping they continue to add feathers to their caps.
