Nanao singh, Amandeep singh, Shiva thapa, & Sarita devi march in to semi-finals

Day three and it was time for the quarter final bouts to take place at the Keenan Stadium at Jamshedpur. Just as expected sizzling action is what boxing aficionados got to see at the 34th National Games.

The matches in both men and women categories got of to a blistering start. It was a walk in the park for Nanao Singh, playing for Manipur, who faced almost no resistance from Madan Rai of Sikkim in the light fly weight section in the men’s draw. The former National and Youth Commonwealth Games champion lead 4:0 in the first round when the referee decided to intervene and stop the bout, resulting in a smooth sailing in to the semi finals for Nanao, where he faces Sandeep of Tripura. “It was an easy outing for me today; I won in the first round itself. I am expecting a tougher fight in the semi final stage though”, he expressed.

Another clash of the day saw 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Amandeep Singh of Punjab register an easy win against Salman Anwar Shaikh representing Maharashtra on points 4:1 in the 49 Kg category. Amandeep now faces Sanjay Kolte of SSCB in the semi finals. Kolte beat Madan Lal of Haryana with a massive margin of 14:1.

In the 56 Kg weight category Shiva Thapa playing for Assam continued his pulverizing streak ousting Nokyoh of Nagaland in round 1 itself. Thapa, a Youth World Boxing Championship silver medalist, playing his first senior tournament was leading 4:0 when the referee intervened to put a halt to the bout.

In the women’s corner, 19 year old Krishna Thapa marched in to the semi-finals of the 48 Kg category crushing her opponent in the first round itself. The referee had to stop the fight as Thapa, representing Madhaya Pradesh, proved too much to handle for Madhusmita Sahoo of Orissa. Thapa dominated the first round 7:0 and was leading 4:0 in the second.

In the same weight category, Vanlal Duati the national champion playing for Tripura continued her good run demolishing Alphonsa Maria Thomas of Kerela on points 15:2. Duati now takes on Monita Devi of Arunachal Pradesh in the semi finals.

Former world and reigning national champion in the 51 Kg weight category, L Sarita Devi of Manipur lived up to her name and thrashed Rebecca Lalinmawii of Mizoram 18:2, booking her place in the semi finals. “I had the physiological advantage going in to the match as I had already defeated her at the national championships last year”, said Sarita after registering her win.

In the light weight category, 19 year old Sagar Tokas, a feisty pugilist from Delhi made and easy entry in to the semi finals registering a win over Meena of Jharkhand on points 10:2.
