India’s Vikas Krishan Yadav was up against the United States of America’s Charles Conwell in the Men’s 75kg weight category at the Rio Olympics 2016. The round-of-32 clash saw Vikas being declared the unanimous winner.
The first of the three rounds started with both the boxers trying to establish range but neither of them was able to land a telling shot. Krishan seemed to be fluid on his feet, but Conwell looked good while bobbing out of the centre line. Conwell might have edged that round by being slightly more active with his punches, however, none of the fighters was able to land a substantial blow.
The second round saw the Indian gaining an upper hand with his uppercuts. Conwell being the smaller fighter was bobbing and weaving and ducking into the punch. It was a good strategy from Vikas that he started throwing uppercuts in the second round.
The third round saw both fighters being a little bit more cautious but you got the feeling that the American was chasing the fight. Vikas easily maintained the distance for most part and was able to pivot away and land body shots at will.
At the end of it, it was a relatively comfortable victory for the Indian pugilist as the judges scored it 29-28 throughout the board, giving Vikas a unanimous decision victory. He will be playing his round-of-16 bout on Saturday at 3.45am IST.
