He attended Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, where, during his senior year, he led the Raiders to a Section 4 and Class 4A win. Following this, in the 2020-21 season, he joined the Indian Hills Community College, playing in 24 games, averaging 12.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. He then transferred to the Buffalo Bulls for two seasons. Along with averaging three assists, he shot 41% from the field and 78% from the free throw line, and he led Buffalo with 15 points, 31.5 minutes, and 35. 9% 3-point percentage per game.

In April 2023, Buffalo sophomore guard Curtis Jones transferred to Iowa State University. He started the opening game against No. 19 TCU and made an appearance in all 37 games, tying the school record. He shot 35.1 percent from outside the arc and 39 percent from the field while averaging 11.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Against No. 10 Illinois in the Sweet 16, he scored a season-high 26 points off the bench, making history as just the third player to do it since 1989.
