LJ Cryer is a guard for the Houston Cougars and plays as a graduate student in the 2024-25 season. Cryer earned several recognitions throughout his collegiate basketball career. During the 2023-24 season, he received the All-America Honorable Mention from the USBWA, along with Big 12 All-Big 12 Second Team and Associated Press All-Big 12 Second Team honors. Cryer was also named to the NABC All-District 8 Second Team. He was a Big 12 All-Tournament selection and Most Valuable Player of the 2023 Shriners Children's Charleston Classic. Cryer was selected as Big 12 Player of the Week twice, on January 30, 2023, and November 21, 2022. During the 2022-23 season, he was selected to the All-Big 12 Third Team and the USBWA All-District VII Team. Cryer posted Baylor's single-season free-throw percentage record of 89.4% and scored a program-high 30 points in an NCAA Tournament game against Creighton. He also led Houston with thirteen 20-point games and 27 double-digit scoring games during the 2023-24 season.

LJ Cryer attended Morton Ranch High School in Katy, Texas, and became one of the top scorers in Texas high school basketball history. He is Morton Ranch's all-time leading scorer with over 3,500 points in his career. Cryer was a four-year varsity letterman and scored the most points in a single season with 1,164 points. As a senior, he averaged 34.2 points, 5.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game. Cryer also won the 2019-20 Guy V. Lewis Award, which is awarded to the Greater Houston Area's best boys' basketball player. He received First-Team All-State recognition and was selected as District MVP multiple times. Cryer also guided the team to a 31-7 season and qualified for the UIL Class 6A Regional Final during his senior season. He committed to Baylor University following his remarkable high school career.
