LSU star Flau'jae Johnson opted against declaring for the 2025 WNBA draft after a stellar season with the Tigers to stay for an extra season in Baton Rouge. Johnson has had a busy offseason, releasing new songs to add to her considerable catalog.
On Friday, Johnson coached Team Flau'jae at the marquee Overtime Select Takeover event against USC Trojans star JuJu Watkins, who coached Team JuJu. The latter's team won the showcase game.
On Saturday evening, Flau'jae Johnson coached her team to win the BETX celebrity basketball game at the L. A Conventional Center. Among the celebrities who had teams were former NBA star Matt Barnes, Chicago Sky assistant coach Ty Young and musician Offset.
The multi-talented Johnson emerged victorious and walked away with the trophy in a clip posted on the BET Instagram page.
"The champ is here," Flau'jae said.
Flau'jae Johnson eyes leadership role next season
During an interview with "Front Office Sports," Flau'jae Johnson broke down her aim for next season with the LSU Tigers under coach Kim Mulkey after a stellar junior season.
“This is my last year,” Johnson said. “I definitely want to win, but I want to make sure I’m being developed to be the player that I want to be in the WNBA. Trying to find out how I can make that happen this year. I want to be as prepared as possible.”
“It’s going to be me, allowing Coach Mulkey to coach the hell out of me. Just so everybody else falls in line. I’m going to have to be the one to take that to show an example, this is the standard here. I’m ready to do that. I wasn’t ready to do that in my previous years. Now, I know what it takes.”
Johnson had also addressed speculation about enterring the transfer portal while on the "Best of both Worlds" podcast in April.
"There was a lot of talk about me going into the draft," Johnson said. "I thought about it, but first of all, I’m not trying to go out on an L, second of all, you have to think about the (WNBA) CBA, third, I want to try to win. I know I can develop more. I’m a great player but I can’t turn it on and off."
Kim Mulkey has rejuvenated the LSU roster in the offseason with the signing of Notre Dame Fighting Irish forward Kate Koval and former South Carolina star MiLaysia Fulwiley from the transfer portal, giving Flau'jae Johnson the chance to shine in a talented team.
