Bronny James declared for the 2024 NBA draft on Apr. 4 and added that he would enter the transfer portal while maintaining his college eligibility. His freshman season at USC was a poor show, disrupted by restricted minutes and health issues.
Bronny did not sit in any post-game interviews during his first season and avoided locker-room interviews as well. During a chat on "The Pat McAfee Show", ESPN's Brian Windhorst shared that it would be better if all information came from Bronny James instead of his father, LeBron James:
"LeBron kinda changed the way he's talked about that during this season. He made it clear that it was his dream," Windhorst said. "It wasn't necessarily Bronny's dream to play with them. I know Bronny puts statements on Instagram. ... He has never done any interviews, [and] I'm not even saying he's gotta do an interview.
"But I would love for us to stop guessing and asking LeBron about what Bronny wants. I would love it if just Bronny would come out and say 'This is what I want.' Whether it is in an interview, just make a video or he comes on your show and says this is what I would like to do. And there's clarity and no barriers."
Last year, LeBron James shocked everyone by claiming that Bronny James was much better than some NBA players.
Earlier this year, after the LA Lakers' 14-point loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, James was heard saying:
"He could play for us right now. Easy."
Despite all this, James Sr. has also asked fans and media to let his "kid be a kid" and make his own decisions instead of forcing him into things.
NBA GM claims Bronny should go back to college
The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor spoke to an NBA General Manager about Bronny James' prospects of joining the NBA. The GM said:
"He [Bronny] should go back to school to develop at his own pace or he risks getting lost in the shuffle, whether or not he's playing with his dad."
In his first year with the USC Trojans, James averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists on 19.4 minutes of game time in 25 games.
Many fans and analysts reckon that a move to the NBA would be detrimental to him, considering his health issues and overall inexperience in playing a high-paced game for long. Bronny maintaining his college eligibility is a sign of hope, but things are still unsure.
Some experts opine that NBA teams would be willing to draft Bronny just so they could also bring LeBron James in since he expressed interest in sharing the court with his son.
Bronny James has until May 29 to re-declare his intentions and forgo his college eligibility before the 2024 NBA draft on June 26 and 27.
