Michigan Spring game stats: 5 takeaways from Sherrone Moore's offseason prep for 2024

The Michigan Wolverines had their Spring Game, and there are a lot of different aspects that we can take away.

With coach Sherrone Moore's first Spring Game on Saturday afternoon, this is the first time we saw his program. Offensive coordinator Kirk Cambell's' Maize team picked up a 17-7 victory against defensive coordinator Wink Martindale's Blue team.

While there are no official stats for the Spring Game, there are places who kept an unofficial mark. Let's take a look at the stats and discuss some key takeaways.

Michigan Spring Game takeaways

#1: Young players playing well

The Michigan Wolverines are going to be a younger team than they were last season, and the underclassmen will need to step up.

Frederick Moore had a pretty solid showing, as he had two catches for 76 yards and a touchdown in the Spring Game. Tight end Marlin Klein had four receptions for 36 yards and is expected to be the second tight end on the depth chart.

If their young players can step up this season, it will be a great sign for this Michigan team going forward.

#2: Kicking is hard

The Michigan Wolverines have been spoiled with a dominant kicker like Jake Moody a few seasons ago. However, they have not figured out the kicking position in terms of getting someone who will consistently make his kicks.

Adam Samaha will be the team's kicker this season. He went 1-for-2 with a wide miss on a 30-yard field goal but made a 31-yard field goal attempt.

#3: Donovan Edwards is ready for the RB1 role

With Blake Corum entering the 2024 NFL draft, Donovan Edwards is going to be the lead running back for Michigan.

He had shown some more bursts throughout the game while bulking up a bit throughout the offseason. Edwards ended the game with five carries for 33 yards and should be able to be a strong player in the run-heavy Wolverines attack.

#4: Quarterback battle will be interesting to disect

As the stats show, Alex Orji had a strong game as he had the best passing game. However, Davis Warren was the only quarterback with a passing touchdown.

Denegal's interception was not good, as he threw on the run right at the defender. Out of the four quarterbacks, Warren had the best game with a great deep ball. This will be a battle with Jack Tuttle as well, but Warren showcased his abilities throughout the game the best.

#5: Wink Martindale's defense is still great

This is the first year that Wink Martindale is associated with the Michigan Wolverines.

He's going to be needed to carry the team with so many changes on the offensive side. While Martindale is known for his exotic blitzing, the defense was balanced at sending pressure.

It could be because it was a scrimmage game and not wanting to give away too many plays in the playbook. But the defense showcased their abilities with an interception and allowing 24 total points.
