Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire has been around the college football world for many years. Throughout his career, he has spent a lot of time both coaching and recruiting. As a result, he has a few funny stories from long recruiting trips.
On Thursday, McGuire appeared on "Always College Football with Greg McElroy" and spoke about an interesting experience he had while driving from Griffin Springs to Houston.
"I actually went recruiting," McGuire said (Timestamp 6:35). "I was in the park, where I go out and meet with a lot of alumni. So, I was in Austin meeting with an alumni group. I went to Griffin Springs, and then I was doing the Houston Touchdown Club the next day. It's easier to drive, and I'm not one of these coaches that needs an entourage. I usually recruit by myself.

"My high school counterparts always laugh at me like, where's your entourage? They think it's funny that these coaches show up with a bunch of different people. So, I was hungry. It's about 10:30 at night. I was driving from Griffin Spring to Houston. I pulled off the road in Grange, Texas, and there's a Taco Bell there. It's been raining for two days. They have a false turn in."
Joey McGuire continued his story.
"I turn in, and it goes concrete to grass," McGuire said. "I get my SUV stuck in the mud. Because it was a rental, the tow truck didn't want to do it. I called Kenny Perry, my special teams coordinator. He sends a guy up that had played for him. Within five minutes, they pulled me out. I get my Taco Bell, and I'm on the road to Houston."
Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will look to improve next season with their No. 48-ranked recruiting class
Joey McGuire is heading into his fourth season as the coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In his first three seasons, the team has been stagnant, finishing with records of 8-5, 7-6 and 8-5. As a result, it will look to improve and finish higher in the Big 12 standings.
Recruiting will be an important factor for McGuire's squad. While they do not rank at the top of recruiting rankings, the Red Raiders had a middling 2025 class. According to 247Sports, they have the No. 48-ranked recruiting class in 2025. However, they stood out in the transfer portal as they have the No. 2-ranked transfer class, according to 247Sports.
