Continuing his remarkable form, Quinton de Kock slammed the highest individual score of the ongoing ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 in Match 23 of the tournament against Bangladesh in Mumbai.

The South African opener scored 174 runs off 140 balls. Opting to bat first, South Africa lost Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen within the first eight overs.

However, De Kock took his time to settle in and kept the scoreboard ticking. Despite the warm conditions in the afternoon, he motored along and stitched a 131-run stand for the third wicket with Aiden Markram (60).

In the 35th over, De Kock completed his 20th ODI century in 101 balls. After a couple of quiet overs, the left-handed batter turned on the afterburners and smashed boundaries for fun.

In his last 24 balls, he hammered 57 runs and put on an entertaining show at the Wankhede Stadium. He took on Bangladesh's premier spinner Shakib Al Hasan and hammered him for a 6, 4, 6, and 4 in four consecutive balls in the 43rd over. He continued the carnage and scored three more boundaries in his next five balls.

At 174 runs with five more overs in the bank, De Kock was well placed to become the first-ever South African to score a double hundred in an ODI. However, in an attempt to slice one towards backward point, he was holed out on the boundary. Every spectator in the crowd rose in applause for what was a scintillating batting effort from the 30-year-old.

As a result of his hundred, South Africa reached a huge total of 382/5 in the first innings. Here are three records Quinton de Kock made during his knock:

#3 Highest individual ODI score at Wankhede Stadium

A true batting surface, the Wankhede Stadium has seen a plethora of superb knocks in its 36 years of ODI history. However, De Kock's 174-run innings is now the highest individual score by any batter in one-day internationals at the iconic venue.

The South African broke a 26-year-old record set by Sanath Jayasuriya, who mustered 151* runs in an ODI against India in 1997.

Among Indians, Virat Kohli holds the record with his 121-run knock against New Zealand in an ODI in 2017.

#2 First South African to hit three hundreds in a single ODI World Cup edition

Quinton de Kock is making his every appearance count in his last ODI World Cup. The southpaw has taken the tournament by storm and has already racked up three centuries in the ongoing quadrennial competition so far. Remarkably, he had zero ODI World Cup hundreds before the 2023 edition.

De Kock started his campaign with a 100 against Sri Lanka before hammering 109 in the next game against Australia. The century against Bangladesh was his third ton of the tournament, making him the first-ever South African batter to achieve the feat in a single edition of an ODI World Cup.

Undoubtedly one of the best white-ball wicket-keeper batters of his generation, Quinton de Kock etched another significant milestone on Tuesday.

He became the first-ever wicket-keeper to slam 150+ in an ODI World Cup game.

The previous highest individual score by a wicket-keeper was held by Australia's Adam Gilchrist when he scored 149 runs against Sri Lanka in the 2007 ODI World Cup final.
