5 extracts from the trailer of MS Dhoni's Biopic that are winning hearts already

2016 is the year of sporting biopics that celebrate three of the most legendary Indian captains – Mohammed Azharuddin, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar. While the one on the controversial captain was released in May, the other two are expected later this year. But the untold story of Dhoni stands out from among the three for being based on the life of a sportsperson who has not yet drawn curtains on his career.

The much-awaited trailer of MS Dhoni – The Untold Story was officially launched on August 10th. And, it is no surprise that the video has over 7 million YouTube views in less than three days. From serving at the longest platform in India to ending the nation’s longest wait to reclaim the world crown, Dhoni’s inspirational story managed to give us goose-bumps in only 3 minutes 18 seconds.

#1 Dhoni as the TT collector

MSD’s incredibly stimulating journey from a Ticket Collector at the Kharagpur Railway Station to the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team has been an open-book story. And when the reel actor syncs with the real Dhoni so immaculately, the glimpses of the Indian hero as a struggler moves our hearts.

“Hum ek cricketer hai, lekin TT ka kaam kar rahe hai yaha Kharagpur station pe”

This dialogue transports us back to the days when we struggled to reach where we are. Sushant Singh Rajput’s acting is powerful enough to make us feel emotionally tethered to the shortcomings of Dhoni the youngster. And the end result? Our love for Captain Cool warms up even more!

#2 His choice between a railway platform and uncertain 22 yards

Dhoni had the comfortable choice of becoming a permanent and well-paid railway employee. Challenging the odds of financial constraints, insufficient support from family, and lack of coaching facilities, he was determined to choose greatness over comfort.

The trailer portrays Dhoni’s dilemma through Anupam Kher, who finds his son’s cricketing dreams unrealistic and wants him to study hard and earn a living. Belonging to a small city that is not given much attention by the selection committee, very few can match the inspiration that Dhoni is.

“Khel khud apni jagah hai, lekin padhoge, likhoge, tabhi toh kissi laayak banoge” – evokes so many childhood memories!

#3 The ingredient of controversy

One of the main ingredients that made the trailer such a brilliant recipe is that of controversy. And social media has already taken up the job of blowing it out of proportion. Towards the end of the trailer, MSD is shown interacting with the selectors over a video call, in which he explains the exclusion of three anonymous players from the ODI team.

This leads to the selectors discussing how Dhoni is showing the door to those who promoted him in the Indian team. Captain Cool responds in his trademark demeanor – “We are all servants and we are all doing national duty”.

Who are these three players? While we cannot expect the movie to reveal the names but we can make some obvious assumptions!

#4 The essence of romance

Not many scriptwriters in Bollywood can resist incorporating a few romantic scenes. Whatever be the genre, a Hindi movie without a few mushy-gushy scenes feels incomplete. The few quick love scenes in the trailer keep the mystery regarding K.R. Advani playing Sakshi Dhoni intact.

Will we get to watch a few glimpses of Dhoni’s undisclosed and restricted marriage? Or a brief insight into his past relationship before tying the knot with Sakshi? Only the movie will tell.

#5 The winning six at Wankhede

This is the masterstroke of the trailer. The six that ended a drought of 28 years, the six that came to define Dhoni as the world’s best finisher, the six India cannot forget. This can be the best possible climax of the movie.

The movie extract takes us back to one of the most celebrated nights in the chronicles of Indian sports. That moment in the trailer when Ravi Shastri announced, “Dhoni finishes off in style, a magnificent six into the crowd, and India lift the world cup after 28 years”, caused goosebumps epidemic in India.

As much as Dhoni’s inspirational flight to success, Sushant’s brilliant acting too deserves a loud applause. From Mahi’s English accent to his poker face, Neeraj Pandey and the team have captured the emotions very well.
