He was regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world during his time. Opening the batting for India, he led them to numerous victories over the years.
He might not have been as good in ODIs as he was in Tests but did not provide a solid platform at the top of the order. He was a part of the World Cup squad on four occasions, including India's famous victory in 1983.
He scored 34 centuries in Tests, which is one of the highest overall, however, it was a different story in ODIs as he managed to score just one century in his career. His only century came in his penultimate ODI against New Zealand in Nagpur.
