India V Sri Lanka x
Arjuna Ranatunga - India vs Sri Lanka

India were cleaned up for 78 runs in reply to Sri Lanka's 195 in the first ODI of the 1986 series, registering their second lowest score against the Lankans.

Kapil Dev struck twice in the initial overs as he sent both the opening batsmen back to the pavilion. Ranatunga and Gurusinha put on a crucial fourth wicket partnership before Bharat Arun ended Gurusinha's stay at the crease.

Valuable contributions from the lower order ensured a decent score for the Lankans as they managed to post a total of 196 runs in the allotted 46 overs.

Ratnayake and Ranatunga ran all over India's batting order as the batsmen were clueless against the Lankan bowlers. Apart from Kris Srikkanth and Dilip Vengsarkar, none of the Indian batsmen touched the double figure mark as they were miserably bundled out for 78 runs.

Arjuna Ranatunga was awarded the man of the match for his impressive all-round display.
