5 records that were broken during Australia's thumping 309-run win over Netherlands in 2023 ODI World Cup 

It was a record-breaking night at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi as Australia handed the Netherlands a massive 309-run defeat in Match 24 of the ongoing ICC men's ODI World Cup 2023.

After opting to bat first, Australia sent the Dutch bowlers on a leather hunt as they piled up a gigantic first-innings total of 399/8 in their 50 overs.

After losing Mitchell Marsh (9) early on, David Warner and Steve Smith put up a 132-run partnership. While Smith was dismissed in the 24th over after a well-made 71, Warner (104) continued to score runs and reached his second consecutive ton in the tournament.

The Netherlands made a slight comeback in the innings when they took four wickets in a span of 46 runs, reducing the Aussies from 244/2 to 290/6. However, Glenn Maxwell was still at the crease. He made a decent start to his innings, scoring 35 runs in his first 21 balls.

At 312/6 after 45 overs, Australia needed Maxwell to fire and provide a late blitz. The 'Big Show' delivered for his side as he smashed his next 19 balls for 66 runs. He hit nine boundaries and eight maximums to bring up the fastest-ever ODI World Cup century (in 40 balls).

With a humongous 400-run target in front of them, the Netherlands completely crumbled and were bowled out for 90 runs.

#5 First player with multiple centuries at No. 5 or below in ODI World Cup history

There are a few batters who can change the complexion of a match in just a handful of overs. Maxwell showed on Wednesday why he is one of the first names on any such list as he smashed his second ODI World Cup century.

Interestingly, both of his tons have come while batting lower down the order, thus becoming the first-ever player to score two or more hundreds while batting at No. 5 or below in ODI World Cup history.

Maxwell made his maiden century in the tournament back in 2015, when he smashed a 51-ball ton against Sri Lanka in Sydney. While he batted at No. 5 in that game, he came on at No. 6 in Delhi against the Netherlands.

#4 Most expensive bowling spell in ODI history

On a day where nothing went right for the Dutch bowlers, their star all-rounder Bas de Leede earned himself an unwanted record.

Leaking runs at an alarming economy rate of 11.5, De Leede gave away 115 runs in his ten overs.

While he did manage to pick up two wickets, his spell became the most expensive bowling figures (2/115) by any bowler in One-Day Internationals.

The previous worst was jointly held by two Australias, Mick Lewis and Adam Zampa, who both gave away 113 runs against South Africa in 2006 and in 2023, respectively.

#3 Most ODI World Cup centuries by an Australian

Undoubtedly one of the best white-ball players of his generation, David Warner continued his stunning form and struck his 22nd ODI hundred.

Out of his 22 hundreds in the format, six have come in the quadrennial tournament, thus becoming the Australian with the most ODI World Cup centuries. He has surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting on the list.

The three-time World Cup winner smashed five centuries in the tournament during his career.

#2 Biggest win in ODI World Cup history (by runs)

It was one-way traffic at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as Australia completed a rout over the Netherlands to win their third consecutive match of the ongoing tournament.

Their 309-run demolition is now the biggest-ever victory by margin of runs in the history of the 50-over World Cup. The Men in Yellow eclipsed their own record, which they set by registering a 275-run victory over Afghanistan at the 2015 World Cup in Perth.

Overall, Australia's win on Wednesday is now the second-biggest in ODI history after India's 317-run triumph over Sri Lanka in Trivandrum earlier this year.

#1 Fastest ODI World Cup century

On October 7, 2023, South Africa's Aiden Markram entertained the crowd in Delhi with a stupendous knock, where he registered a 49-ball hundred against Sri Lanka.

18 days later, Glenn Maxwell has outdone Markram's effort and smashed the fastest-ever century in ODI World Cup history on the very same ground.

Maxwell has broken the previous record by a comfortable distance of nine balls, taking just 40 balls to reach to the three-figure mark.

Overall, Maxwell's 40-ball 100 is also the fourth-quickest in one-day internationals. AB de Villiers' 31-ball ton against the West Indies is still on top of the overall charts.
