7 Indian Players who played in 2013 Champions Trophy but won't play in 2017

The Indian Champions Trophy squad for the 2017 edition was announced on Monday and the sqaud consisted of the usual suspects as the selected banked on experience over glamour in their quest to defending their title in England.

7 members from the team that won in 2013 do not feature in the 2017 squad. We look at those players here:

7.R Vinay Kumar

The Karnataka seamer was picked in the squad on the back of a good 2013 IPL season with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, where in 16 matches he picked up 23 wickets, albeit at a high economy rate of 8.19.

The speedster had featured in the Indian limited-overs scheme of things in some of the tours in the previous 15 months, having travelled with the team to Australia where he made his Test debut and also played a bigger role in the limited-overs leg of that tour.

Although he didn’t get a game in the competition, he can say that he was part of the setup that won the title in England and later featured in the home ODI series against Australia as well, which too India won.

However, he proved extremely expensive in the deciding game of that series and ever since then, has not found a place in the Indian setup, in any of the three formats.

6.Irfan Pathan

Picked as backup seamer to the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and others, Irfan Pathan also did get a single game in the main draw of the Champions Trophy but featured only in the warm-up matches.

The Baroda cricketer had not had the greatest of IPL campaigns, having picked up a mere 10 wickets, but like Vinay Kumar had featured in the scheme of things in the past year, having played a major role in India’s 4-1 ODI series win over Sri Lanka away from home.

However, that tour to Sri Lanka proved to be the last year of international cricket that Pathan and despite not playing a single game in the group stages of the Champions Trophy, he ended up being a part of the title winning team.

5.Amit Mishra

The leg-spinner, who has been in India’s scheme of things in recent times, was part of the squad then, but like Pathan played only in the warm-up matches, in the lead to the main tournament.

Mishra was picked after he had a good outing in the Indian Premier League for the then newly-launched Sunrisers Hyderabad but did not get the nod in the Indian side for the games as MS Dhoni and the management went for Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ever since then, he has played for India in several competitions but post the 2014 World T20, has failed to find a berth in any of the other major tournaments. Hopefully, he can find a spot in a couple of years time at the 2019 50-over World Cup.

4.Ishant Sharma

The lanky fast bowler, in those days, featured for India in all three formats of the game and in the Champions trophy triumph of 213, proved to be the hero of the side, picking up the wickets of danger men Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara in successive deliveries to help India claw back and eventually win the competition.

However, a few months after that performance, he was at the receiving end of some exceptional lusty hitting at the hands of James Faulkner, who knocked the stuffings out of him in a game in Mohali and helped his side win a game that they did not look like doing so.

Ever since that game, Ishant has found it incredibly hard to get a place in the Indian limited-overs squad but has become a key member of the Test squad, where he leads a pool of extremely talented bowlers.

3.Murali Vijay

The right-handed opener, who has become one of the mainstays of the Test team, featured in the competition in 2013, playing the warm-up matches. After failing in both those games, he was replaced by Rohit Sharma at the top of the order and that proved to be a masterstroke as he and Shikhar Dhawan, almost single-handedly carried the Indian batting forward.

Vijay has since not featured in the limited-overs scheme of things, but was in contention for a berth in the World Cup squad of 2015, following his impressive showing in Tests against Australia Down Under, but was not picked.

He will hope that sometime in the near future, he will once again be picked in the limited-overs squad and can justice to his potential in that format.

2.Dinesh Karthik

Before the Champions Trophy, Dinesh Karthik’s last game in India colours came in 2010. However, a superb IPL campaign for the Mumbai Indians in 2013 meant that he was picked in the squad for the event.

Karthik had a superb time with the bat in the warm-up matches, where he smashed two centuries, but could not keep it going in the main competition, scoring a single fifty in the game against the West Indies.

Heading into this Champions Trophy as well, Karthik found himself in good rhythm as far as his batting was concerned, but unlike then could not get a berth in the 15-man squad.

1.Suresh Raina

After not finding a place in the 15-man squad for the 2017 Champions Trophy, one must wonder whether Suresh Raina is a part of India’s ODI scheme of things. The left-hander, who has featured in several of India’s major triumphs in the past, finds himself out of favour in the 50-over scheme of things.

One of Raina’s biggest drawbacks is his inability to counter the short ball despite having been on the international scene for over a decade. It is an area of his game where he has shown improvement, but it is almost as if he has not been able to still totally figure out how to counter it in the international game and such deficiencies are soon exploited by the opposition, which results in his downfall.

His last ODI game for India came in October 2015. The question is: Will he get another 50-over game in the future?
