As the much anticipated test series between India and Australia gets underway in a weeks time, bookmakers across Australia have placed their bets and instead of Australia, it is India who are being considered as the favorites to win the Border-Gavasker Trophy which begins with the Boxing Day test at Melbourne from 26th December.
Tab Sportsbet’s Glenn Munsie said that 80 percent of the bets have been put on an Indian victory, and it is the first time that the Australian side has fallen so much in pecking order.
“If you do run into someone who wants to back Australia to win the series, send them on down to their TAB,” said Munsie.
It has been three years since Australia last won a test series (against South Africa in 2009) against a top-four ranked side. Bookies are also considering Australia’s poor past record and a rather inexperienced bowling attack as the main reason for the low amount of money placed in favor of their win.
“At first glance, it appeared understandable that Australia drifted from 2.20 dollars favourite to 2.40 dollars equal favourite (draw 4.00 dollars) to beat the number two-ranked Indians after their second Test capitulation to the eighth-ranked New Zealand in Hobart,” reported the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’.
Bookies also believe that the current Indian batting line up is far more superior to that of Australia’s and it makes them a raging favorite to win the four test series.
Although India has never won a test series on Australian soil, they did come very close to winning when they leveled the series during the 2003-04 tour. But considering the bets and Australia’s poor run of form, Team India has a very good chance of registering their first ever series win Down Under.
