In the game of cricket, a sixer is the shot that sends every fan into a frenzy. An ultimate expression of brute force by the batsman taking the bowler apart, the sixer is arguably a spectator’s most favourite shot in the book. An Indian cricket fan may have stood witness to several sixers in their lifetimes, but the one six that no Indian will ever forget is that by Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the 2011 World Cup Final when the Indian captain coolly sent a full length delivery of Sri Lanka’s Kulasekera into the stands, thus hitting the winning runs and clinching the World Cup as a vibrant Yuvraj Singh celebrated at the other end. This six by MSD was special, for it will be the six that will go down in the annals of Indian cricketing history as a defining moment. It was the shot that defined the hopes, dreams and unbridled joy of a billion fans from the world’s biggest cricketing nation who waited with bated breath for most of their lives for that one precious moment: India winning the World Cup.

The sixer epitomised the hard work put in by the players in realising the dreams of the entire nation. On a night when the heat inside the historic Wankhede stadium was leaving people gasping for breath, inspirational captain MS Dhoni showed what it means by leading from the front. In what was the most historic run chase in Indian cricketing history, there really could not have been a more fitting ending. The monstrous shot from Captain Cool not only sealed the World Cup and sent fans into a collective frenzy, it also took Indian cricket to a new level. The next morning, the world woke up to a new world champion team and the image of MSD hitting the winning runs adorned the front pages of every newspaper, thus getting imprinted in the mind of every Indian fan.

For people who belong to the young generation who did not get to witness the 1983 World Cup victory first hand, the 2011 success made us get to enjoy the feeling of being World Champions. A 28 year old wait came to an end with a thumping sixer from the poster boy of Indian cricket. Even today, the memories remain fresh and sweet. Thank you team India for turning our dreams into reality.
