Daniel Vettori in action

Veteran left arm spinner Daniel Vettori has been ruled out of the upcoming series against India owing to a back injury. The injury had seen Vettori miss the ongoing series against West Indies and has aggravated once again forcing him out of the upcoming series.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said: “Daniel Vettori won’t be considered for the India series and his international cricket career remains under an injury-darkened cloud.”

On Wednesday, the New Zealand squad for the 5 ODIs will be announced, which commences from the 19th of January. Two Test matches at Wellington and Auckland will also take place following the ODIs.

The left-armer is also scheduled to discuss his future with coach Hesson: “I’ve spoken to Dan and he wants to come back from Australia and see how his body is, then have a good catch up with Brendon and I and chat about his future,” Hesson said.

Vettori is currently representing Brisbane at the Australian Big Bash in Australia and has recently been named the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise for the upcoming 7th edition of IPL, raising further questions over his playing career.

Vettori turns 35 later this month, and the back injury seemingly threatens to end his career. Vettori became the youngest cricketer to play for New Zealand, when he debuted at the tender age of 18 and is amongst one of the eight players to have completed the unique double of 3000 runs and 300 wickets in Tests.
