Fawad Ahmed set for Ashes call after recieving Australian citizenship

34-year-old Fawad Ahmed has now officially become an Australian citizen, which means that he is now eligible to play in the Ashes series this year.

Having been granted Australian permanent resident status in November 2012, Fawad Ahmed was looking to receive full citizenship so that he could be considered for an Ashes selection.

Fawad Ahmed is now an Australian citizen, following the announcement made by the former federal minister for immigration, Brendan O’Connor.

Ahmed, who applied for refugee status when he came to Australia four years ago, has already played for Australia A in their England tour, but according to the new eligibility rules, he had to receive full citizenship in order to play for Australia.

Ahmed said: “It’s a long journey and it was a long struggle. The whole community of Australia – the people really supported me throughout this journey. It’s a victory for our sport … and for this country. I just can’t wait to be a citizen.

“Especially in the field of cricket, I just want to give back something to this country.”

“I have a great opportunity with Australia A in Zimbabwe and South Africa. I will try my best to perform well in those two tours and it depends on the selections. It will be an honour to represent Australia in the Ashes or maybe other tournaments,” added Ahmed.

Fawad Ahmed, who has played ten first-class matches in Pakistan, emigrated to Australia in 2010 on a short-stay visa and soon after his arrival, he applied for refugee status.

His initial application was declined but was granted permission for permanent residency in November 2012. Fawad has also played for Melbourne Renegades, after he was granted a special exemption to play in the Big Bash League.
