For some reason, the fielders today are always keen to pick up the ball and have a shy at the stumps, irrespective of whether the batsman is in his crease or not.

Often, in this exuberance, the fielders throw down the stumps and then the ball ricochets off them and scoots across for easy runs for the batting side, which, at the end of the game, might well be the difference between the sides.
