Former West Indies cricket captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has opened a new gym on the East Bank of the Demerara, close to the Providence Stadium.

The former middle-order batsman has named his gym Fitness 53 in reference to the number on his shirt during his playing days with the regional side, reports CMC.

Sarwan, 36, says the response has been overwhelming.

"I am a bit surprised that the response has been so great with persons already showing their interest in getting signed up," said Sarwan on Tuesday. He has 15 Test centuries and five in One-Dayers and averages above 40 in both formats.

The gym includes sections for weights, cardio, aerobics, a sauna and a fitness bar.

"I think it's something that I've worked very hard to accomplish for the past year, year and a half and I wanted to put it together to offer something to the public so that they will enjoy and of course try and help them with their health and that's our focus."

"I named the Gym 'Fitness 53' after my West Indies ODI number," he said.

"Opening a gym was an idea I thought for over five years and I want people to judge the quality it will provide for themselves, but I think you can tell it's more of a modern kind of gym."
