Hobart Hurricanes wipe out Brisbane despite Lynn's ton

Hurricanes beat Heat in a close encounter

A magnificent hundred from Chris Lynn went in vain, as his team Brisbane Heat remained winless in the ongoing Big Bash League, as they lost to Hobart Hurricanes, by 15 runs, in Brisbane. Hobart, after winning the toss, chose to bat first on a good wicket.

Almost all the batsmen in the visitors line-up, contributed with useful runs, as the Hurricanes posted a massive 194 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs. The openers Ben Dunk and Tim Paine put on 50 runs for the first wicket, scoring 27 and 25 respectively.

In the middle order, both Kumar Sangakkara and George Bailey played useful cameo knocks in quick succession, before Aussie batsman Daniel Christian unleashed a flurry of shots, scoring 56 off just 24 deliveries, to power his team to a big total.

For the Heat side, Samuel Badree was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 2/27 in his 4 overs. Luke Feldman and Mark Steketee picked up a wicket each. The former was also the most expensive as he gave away 53 runs in his quota of 4 overs.

Chasing the big total, the home side needed to get off to a good start, but that wasn’t to be, as they were reeling at 7/2, at one stage. It was only then that captain Chris Lynn walked in and forced to take the game away from the Hurricanes.

The 25-year old with his breathtaking display of batting, almost pushed his side home, before his dismissal turned things around. He scored 101 off just 51 balls, which included 5 fours and 7 massive sixes. He was briefly supported by Sam Heazlett who contributed 26.

Soon after reaching his century, Lynn was dismissed cheaply, and Heat conceded defeat. Jake Reed was the best bowler for Hurricanes, as his figures of 3/31, prevented the Heat side from making a comeback into the match. Cameron Boyce also contributed with 2 wickets.

By this loss, the Heat side are yet to open their account in this year’s Big Bash League and are in danger of getting knocked out early from the competition. They have now lost four consecutive matches, and need to win all their remaining matches to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Brief Scores: Hobart Hurricanes 194/4 (20.0 Ovs) (Dan Christian 56*, Sangakkara 32; Badree 2/27) beat Brisbane Heat 179/9 (20.0 Ovs) (Chris Lynn 101, Heazlett 26; Reed 3/31), by 15 runs.
