India becomes No.1 ranked Test team

India overtook Pakistan to reach the top of the Test rankings after defeating New Zealand in the second Test.

After notching up wins in the first two Tests of their 13-match home season, the Indian team has ascended to the top of the ICC Test rankings, overtaking Pakistan to reach the number one spot.

Before the start of the second Test between India and New Zealand, Pakistan were at the top of the table with 111 points in their kitty. India, with a difference of a solitary point, was placed second. The 178-run win in Kolkata has helped the Indian team usurp their neighbours to the top spot.

With the Kanpur Test already in their bag, India entered the second Test with the aim of reclaiming the top spot and seal the series. After a 178-run win in Kolkata, their 250th Test at home, India took an unassailable 2-0 in the three-Test series.

New Zealand stay put at the number seven spot, level with Sri Lanka.

This is the fourth time that India has ascended to the number one spot in Tests. Their first tryst with the top spot in Tests lasted for 614 days, in a period from December 2009 and August 2011.

The only member from the current Indian team to have been part of the team that first reached the number one spot is Murali Vijay.

This is the third time that the Virat Kohli-led Indian team has clinched the number one spot in the rankings. Their earlier stint at the top lasted for 38 days, starting from January 2016. They also went to the top after beating West Indies last month. India’s stay at the top lasted just six days.

Pakistan took the title from the Indian team after the fourth Test between India and West Indies at Trinidad was washed out.
