India announced a 15 member squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand which begins on October 22 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Shikhar Dhawan, who missed out for the ODIs against Australia was brought back into the squad while Dinesh Karthik too made a comeback.

Also, making a return to the squad is Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur, who was a part of the Indian ODI team in Sri Lanka.

However, there was one surprise inclusion and a few names who should have been selected.

Here are the 5 players who missed out:

KL Rahul

The 24-year-old batsman from Karnataka has not been in great form in ODIs off late and will now have to face the brunt of it as he is forced to miss the ODIs against the Blackcaps.

While his form in the longer format of the game has been exemplary, he has been quite inconsistent in the shorter formats.

He did not play a single game in the recently concluded ODI and T20I series against Australia. He will now have to go back to the drawing board and play for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy to prove himself to the selectors once again.

With the World Cup in a couple of years, Rahul will look to make a comeback soon and cement his place in the side.

Shreyas Iyer

The 22-year-old must be wondering what more he has to do in order to get the selectors to notice him and include him in the squad.

He has been in sensational form over the past year or so and would feel extremely hard done with his non-selection.

He hardly put a foot wrong in the recently concluded ODI and Test series against New Zealand A and was India's highest run-getter. He was in sublime form against South Africa A as well in the series prior to the tour to New Zealand as well.

He will hope to get the selectors to notice him soon enough so that he can make a mark for himself on the big stage.

Karn Sharma

England v India - NatWest International T20 2014

The 29-year-old leg-spinner had a short stint with the Indian cricket team back in 2014 but was dropped after inconsistent performances against Sri Lanka.

However, he seems to have found his groove once again with some impressive performances on the domestic circuit over the past couple of years.

Along with Shreyas Iyer's batting, Sharma produced some magical bowling spells to take the series away from New Zealand A.

With the emergence of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Axar Patel, Karn might find it hard to break into the side but he would hope for his numbers to do the talking.

Ravindra Jadeja

India v West Indies - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup

The former World no. 1 Test bowler has not played a single match since the conclusion of the ODI series against West Indies.

With Kuldeep and Chahal performing exceptionally well, Jadeja will have to do something extraordinary to re-cement his place back in the limited overs setup.

Jadeja hasn't performed badly in the limited overs format and will hope for the selectors to give him a few more chances before the World Cup in 2019.

He is currently a part of Saurashtra's squad in the Ranji Trophy and will look to grab a lot of wickets and make a comeback to the Indian ODI side soon.

Ravichandran Ashwin

New Zealand v India

The 31-year-old offie is coming off a successful stint with Worcestershire in England's County Division and will be itching to make a comeback to the limited overs side.

However, he will have to wait for some time as Kuldeep, Chahal, and Axar have been doing the job for the Men in Blue.

He has not been too effective in ODIs since the beginning of the year as he has not taken a lot of wickets and has given away a lot of runs.

Just like Jadeja, he too will look to pick up a lot of wickets in the Ranji Trophy and hope to be given a few chances in the ODI squad in order to cement his place in the side once again.
