India played their first Test match on June 25, 1932. Since then, India has played 468 Test matches with 31 players captaining the side. Let’s take a look at all the Test captains who have captained India in more than 5 matches.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has captained India in 43 matches, out of which India have won 20 matches and 11 have ended in draw. Dhoni has captained India from 2008 and is also currently serving as the captain of the Indian Test Team. Under Dhoni, India has won 11 Test series, and he has a win percentage of 46.5%.

Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble has captained India in 14 matches, out of which India won 3 matches and 6 matches ended in draw. Kumble captained India from 2007 to 2008. Under Anil Kumble, India didn’t win a single Test series and he had a win percentage of 21.42%.

Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid captained India in 25 matches out of which, India won 8 and 11 ended in draw. Dravid captained India from 2003 to 2007. Under Dravid, India won 4 Test series. Dravid had a win percentage of 32%.

Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly was captain of India in 49 matches, out of which India won 21 and 15 ended in draw. Ganguly captained India from 2000 to 2006. Under him, India won 10 Test series. Ganguly had a win percent of 42.8%.

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar was captain of India in 25 matches, out of which India won 4 and 12 ended in draw. Sachin was captain of India from 1996 to 2000. Under him, India won three Test series. Sachin Tendulkar’s win percentage was 16%.

Mohammad Azharuddin

Mohammad Azharuddin captained India in 47 matches, out of which India won 14 and 19 ended in draw. Azharuddin was captain of India from 1990 to 1999 (During a few series from 1996 to 1999 Sachin was the captain). Under him, India has won 6 Test series. Mohammad Azharuddin has win percentage of 29.78%.

Dilip Vengsarkar

Lala Amarnath was captain of India in 15 matches, out of which India won 2 and 7 ended in draw. Amarnath was captain of India from 1947 to 1949 and in 1953, against a series against Pakistan. Under him, India has won a single test series, his win percent is 13.33%.

CK Nayudu

CK Nayadu was the first ever captain of Indian Test team. He was captain of India for 4 matches and India didn’t win a single match under his captaincy. He was captain of India from 1932 to 1934.
