Someone has rightly said “Ideas are easy. It's the execution of ideas that really separates the sheep from the goats.” Saath7 Cricket Mahotsav, a cricket tournament organised by Wonder Cement was merely an idea a couple of months ago but the way that idea was executed has turned this tournament into one of the biggest sporting events in the state of Rajasthan.
The tournament, which was inaugurated by legendary cricketer Kapil Dev on 3rd November in Jaipur, aims at promoting young cricketing talents across the state. Vivek Patni, the Director of Wonder Cement, talked to the Sportskeeda team about their primary objective behind conducting this tournament, the reason why they chose cricket and more.
What was the first thing that came to your mind when you thought of starting this tournament?
The prime objective of the tournament is to provide the best facilities to the players of Rajasthan at the grassroots level. We want to not only see regular male players but also female players and differently abled players in this tournament.
Seven all female teams and one team of differently abled players have been given direct entry to the district level. What was the reason behind this?
Our whole idea was to try and encourage some girls to participate but we didn’t realise that we will receive so many registrations and that 250 girls will participate. What made our process easier was that there teams full of girls also, so we thought of giving them encouragement by pushing them straight to the district level.
What happens when women participate in a tournament like this is that the social environment improves and the whole ecosystem becomes much more robust. It is my firm belief that for the next 45 days, this state is going to be very busy with the #Saath7 tournament.
Mr. Tarun Chauhan, Advisor at Wonder Cement, added to Mr. Patni’s answer, saying, “Imagine a family that takes part in this tournament. Normally, everyone is busy with their work, but this tournament will give them the time to talk about Cricket with each other, spreading more awareness and creating a lot more buzz around the event. What is also important is that Saath7 can contribute to making Rajasthan a state that consists of a lot of great sportspersons and keep everyone prosperous.”
What was the reason behind choosing Cricket?
Cricket is a very popular sport in our country and even though Hockey was our national sport till 2012, Cricket remains the one sport that is played across India and has the maximum fan following. So, the main reason behind choosing Cricket was to encourage the participation of youngsters in the sport at the junior level.
Can we see Wonder cement promoting other sports in the state in the near future?
Yes, of course. We supported the Jaipur Sports League, which happened last year and yes, we are looking forward to promoting many other sporting events in the future.
