Johan Botha announces retirement from all forms of cricket

What's the story?

Former South African all-rounder, Johan Botha on Wednesday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket with immediate effect. Having played all forms of the game for Proteas, Botha was presently part of Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL). However, the 36-year-old has decided to call it a day.

Botha played 78 ODIs, five Tests and 40 T20Is. He has 72 ODI, 17 Test, and 37 T20I wickets to his name. The right-hander also made 609 ODI and 201 T20I runs.

According to the official website of Hobart Hurricanes, the 36-year-old has taken this decision due to wear and tear on his body and sheer physical fatigue behind.

In case you didn't know...

In a span of 10 years, Botha, apart from representing his country, played various T20 leagues around the world. Once, the off-spinner was an irremovable part of South African limited-overs team, however, owing to his inconsistent run, he was dropped from the side.

The Johannesburg-born cricketer made his debut way back in 2005 and last played in an international match in 2012. Despite being out of the national scenes, he played in many leagues.

Botha had recently joined the new franchise, Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL). Regardless, he decided to hang his boots, thereby spreading shock-waves to the BBL supporters.

The report on the official website of franchise read:

"Ironically, Botha finished his short 10-game career with the Hobart Hurricanes tonight battling against his former Sydney Sixers team-mates at the SCG, in a gripping and high-quality top of the table clash.

It further mentioned:

"We wish the enthusiastic fitness fanatic, cyclist, golfer and runner all the very best with his future endeavors and thank him for his time and efforts at the Hobart Hurricanes since signing prior to the Abu Dhabi T20 in September 2018."

What's next?

Having spent a lot of time and played at various levels, Botha might opt for a coaching career in near future. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes will look to continue their purple patch when they take on the Brisbane Heat at home on 29 January.
