Kapil Dev feels that MS Dhoni should continue as ODI skipper

Dhoni has been ODI captain since 2008

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev is of the opinion that current limited overs skipper MS Dhoni should continue leading the side in the One Day Internationals as he has enough experience to carry the burden on his shoulders for a few more years. With Virat Kohli doing a fantastic job leading the side in the Tests as we have seen in the recently concluded series against New Zealand and in the ongoing series against England, many fans feel that he should take over as the limited overs captain as well. Kapil, however, feels that Dhoni is doing a good enough job as the ODI and T-20 captain.

“I think the answer people should look for is are we ready to ask Dhoni to take a back seat. It is more important. I think if he is good enough he should carry on. When the time will come Dhoni may quit all three formats,” Kapil said.

“But I think at the moment it is very important Dhoni is doing a good job. I think he has enough experience and he should continue,” he continued.

Dhoni, who led India to two World Cup triumphs in 2007 and 2011 has arguably been India’s best ever captain. He has been under the radar ever since he passed on the baton to Kohli in Tests after India’s drubbing at the hands of England and Australia. However, he continues to perform well as the captain in ODIs and T20s. He led India to the semifinals of the 2015 World Cup in Australia as well as the 2016 World T20 held at Bangladesh.

The energetic and enigmatic Virat Kohli who has been the Test captain for 21 matches now has led India to 13 victories and has broken numerous records along the way looks set to stay on for the long run. On comparing, Kohli and Dhoni as captain, the former World Cup-winning captain felt that it was too early to do so.

“It is too early to answer that and again the two individuals are different and every individual is different. Kohli is very expressive, while Dhoni is calm and quite. I think it is very difficult to compare because both have different teams and different attitude,” Kapil felt.

The Indian cricket team, who are currently playing the 5th and final Test against England at Chennai will be looking to inflict another defeat on the Englishmen and win the series 4-0. The English team will be travelling back home for a Christmas break after the Test and will come back early next month to face MS Dhoni's men for the rest of the series which consists of 3 ODIs and 3 T20s.
