Rayalaseema Kings toppled Uttarandhra Lions by six wickets in Match No. 10 of the ongoing 2024 Andhra Premier League on July 7 at the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium. Later in the day at the same venue, the Vizag Warriors upstaged Godavari Titans to take the top spot on the APL 2024 points table.

The day started with Lions occupying their number one position in the six-team standings. However, a win for the Kings over the Lions helped them usurp the latter to take the top spot. Unfortunately for the Kings, their reign at the top lasted for just a handful of hours as they were replaced by the Warriors.

At the moment, both the Warriors and the Kings hold three wins each from four games. However, the Warriors (0.856) edged past the Kings (0.514) in terms of a superior NRR. The Lions, meanwhile, slipped to number three owing to their six-wicket defeat.

Coastal Riders and the Titans occupy the next two slots on the table. The winless Bezawada Tigers, on the other hand, continue to remain this season’s wooden spooners.

Rayalaseema Kings and Vizag Warriors ace clinical run-chases

In the first match of the double-header at Vizag on July 7, Uttarandhra Lions skipper Gulfaam Saleh won the toss and opted to bat first. Captain Saleh, however, failed to justify his decision as an opener by falling for just four runs to Satyanarayana Raju. Middle-order batters Pinninti Tapaswi and Seeram Rahul scored identical 20s before Girinath Reddy (2/23), Mohammad Rafi (2/26), Bodhala Kumar (2/17) skittled Uttarandhra Lions’ entire batting line-up for just 121 in 20 overs.

Rayalaseema Kings easily surpassed their 122-run target with six wickets and 15 balls to spare. Opener Prasanth Kumar top-scored with 36-ball 51 while unbeaten Gutta Rohit and captain Girinath Reddy listed the winning runs in the 18th over of the run-chase.

In the second match of the day, the Vizag Warriors ravaged Godavari Titans in a rain-marred game at the same Visakhapatnam-based venue. Courtesy of a sublime 33-ball 54 from SDNV Prasad, and a cautious 37 from unbeaten Yara Sandeep, the Titans made 164-6 after being invited to bat first.

Among the Warriors bowlers, new-ball operator Kodavandla Sudharsan and Yeddala Reddy claimed two wickets each while Bailapudi Yeswanth got wicketkeeper Penmetsa Raju for a duck at the halfway stage of the innings.

Chasing a revised 141-run target from 17 overs, Warriors opener Ashwin Hebbar shared match-defining 50-plus stands with number three Srikar Bharat (29 off 19 balls) and unbeaten Garimella Teja (32* off 21 balls) to take his team home with eight wickets and seven balls to spare (DLS method).

Hebbar himself unfurled the innings of the match through his boundary-filled masterclass knock of 75* from 43 balls.
