The 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final between South Africa and Australia commenced on Wednesday (June 11) at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London in front of a huge crowd. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first, considering the greenish surface and the overcast conditions at the venue.
Proteas' bowling attack utilized the friendly conditions and bundled out Australia for 212 in the first innings in 56.4 overs. South African bowling spearhead Kagiso Rabada shepherded his side with the ball, picking up his 17th five-wicket haul and rising to the occasion in the championship match.
Marco Jansen supported him well by picking up three wickets. Steve Smith (66) fought through tough periods in the first two sessions before perishing to part-timer Aiden Markram's bowling in the 42nd over. All-rounder Beau Webster rode his luck and played an enterprising knock of 72 (92) to help Australia reach a respectable first-innings total.
Australian bowlers then returned the favor during the final session by reducing South Africa to 43 for four at Stumps on the opening day. Temba Bavuma (3) and David Bedingham (8) were at the crease for the Proteas at the end.

"It was really hard"- Beau Webster after play on Day 1 of SA vs AUS 2025 WTC final
Speaking after stumps on day 1, Australia all-rounder Beau Webster revealed that it was a difficult pitch for the batters, with life getting even harder against a high-quality South African bowling attack. He said:
"Had some luck, 20 or 30 balls, it was really hard, little bit of luck and managed to get through, we got a total on board. With Rabada and Jansen running in, it was tough. I stuck to my plans, worked hard in the last few years, it was tricky at the start."
"There's plenty there, we saw in the last session, still tricky if you're a batter. Our bowling attack is strong for a number of years. We saw how much the ball was moving around, 4 wickets is an outstanding effort from the boys," Webster added.
