Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis showed exactly what the side was missing in their sub-par 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with a breathtaking century in the second T20I against Scotland at Edinburgh on September 6. Despite debuting only in 2022, this was already Inglis' second T20I century after his 110 against India last year.
It was also the fastest T20I century by an Australian batter with the 29-year-old reaching the landmark in only 43 deliveries. Inglis also tied Finch with two T20I centuries - the second most by an Aussie batter behind only Glenn Maxwell with five.
Inglis smashed seven boundaries and as many maximums in his sparkling display, leading to fans on Twitter going berserk with the following reactions:
Fans continued their praise of Inglis for his stunning knock with one saying:
"Well played Jos Inglis! Fantastic 100! Of just 43 balls! This man has proper technical skills, game awareness and temperament to succeed in all 3 formats! If CA are backing him as an opener in white ball then well and good cause he's an impactful player and a match winner."
"This inglis fellow has got 2 t20i centuries within 10 months how he went unsold in ipl is a mystery," a fan tweeted.
"Inglis is batting on a different surface if you look at the SRs of the others," said a fan.
Josh Inglis' heroics help Australia post massive total
While Josh Inglis was going ballistic at one end, the rest of the Australian lineup struggled to come to grips with the surface in the second T20I against Scotland.
They lost their first T20I star Travis Head for a golden duck in the second over and he was soon followed by Jake Fraser-McGurk in the fourth over as Australia fell to 23/2.
However, Inglis took over from that point and finished on 103 off 49 deliveries to single-handedly resurrect the Aussie innings. The middle-order power-hitters Cameron Green (36 off 29), Marcus Stoinis (20* off 20), and Tim David (17* off 7) provided some support to Inglis despite the first two struggling to completely unleash.
Eventually, Australia finished with a formidable 196/4 in their 20 overs as they looked to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the best-of-three T20I series. The Men in Yellow won the series opener by comfortably chasing down 155 in a mere 9.4 overs with seven wickets in hand.
Before the ongoing series, the two teams met only once in the shortest format - the final over thriller in the recent T20 World Cup that Australia won by five wickets.
