Australia captain Pat Cummins doesn't anticipate changes to their playing XI despite a 295-run hammering in the opening Test against India at the Optus Stadium in Perth. However, the right-arm speedster stressed the need for introspection to make a comeback in the five-Test series against India.
Australia's woeful batting performance in their first innings, folding for 104, followed by an uninspired bowling performance were the chief reasons that the hosts crumbled to a 295-run loss. Although they showed admirable resistance, a 534-run target left India plenty of runs to play with and they finished the job after tea. Travis Head looked the most impressive among Aussie batters on day four, scoring 89 runs.
Speaking to ABC Radio, Cummins stated:
"I’d be very surprised if we changed anything."
A while later, speaking to SEN Radio, the 31-year-old remarked:
"I’m not a selector but I dare say there won’t be any changes."
Cummins managed two wickets in the first innings and one in the second. Due to his underwhelming show with the ball in Perth, the quick will be under pressure heading into the second Test in Adelaide.
"I’m sure this week there will be plenty of conversations" - Pat Cummins
Cummins suggested that the team were putting in the hard yards, but underlined the need to put in plenty more ahead of the pink-ball fixture in Adelaide. Speaking to Fox Sports, he said:
"There’s a lot of experience there, this summer it’s a sample size of one, I think they’re going about their work really well. But no doubt we’ve got a bit of work to do and I’m sure this week there will be plenty of conversations and plenty of time in the nets and conversations around if we come up against a similar attack in similar conditions, what are those things we could have done better."
The second Test between Australia and India begins on December 6 in Adelaide.
