South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne pulled off a stunning catch on the stroke of lunch to dismiss the dangerous Australian batter Travis Head on Day 1 of the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final. The match commenced at Lord’s Cricket Ground in England on Wednesday, June 11.
The breakthrough came on the second delivery of the 24th over in Australia’s innings. Marco Jansen bowled a full delivery angling down the leg side. Travis Head, anchored on his back foot, attempted to glance it fine but managed only a faint edge.
The ball flew to the right of wicketkeeper Verreynne, who pulled off a spectacular one-handed dive to complete a stunning catch.
Here’s a video of the dismissal:
The left-hander was dismissed for 11 runs off 13 deliveries, which included a solitary boundary. Head’s departure left Australia reeling at 67/4 after 23.2 overs.
Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen pick up two wickets each to put SA on top in the WTC 2025 final
South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bowl first under overcast conditions.
Kagiso Rabada was in rhythm right from the start, delivering three consecutive maidens from one end. In his fourth over — the seventh of Australia’s innings — he struck twice, dismissing Usman Khawaja for a 20-ball duck and sending Cameron Green back for four off just three deliveries.
Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith tried to steady the innings by surviving a few more overs of Rabada’s fiery spell without losing their wickets.
Just as it seemed the duo was building a solid partnership, their 30-run stand for the third wicket was broken by Marco Jansen, who removed Labuschagne for 17 off 56 deliveries.
Travis Head came in at No. 5 and looked to settle in with intent but his stay was short-lived as he was dismissed by Jansen.
