Pakistan lost eight wickets for just 36 runs to collapse from 155/2 to 191 all out in the 2023 World Cup match against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday, October 14. It was great team work from India with the ball as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each.
Sent into bat after losing the toss, Pakistan got off to an assured start as their openers looked solid against Bumrah (2/19) and Siraj (2/50). Imam-ul-Haq hit Siraj for three fours in the second over. The threatening stand was, however, broken when Siraj trapped Abdullah Shafique (20) lbw with a cross-seam back of a length delivery that kept low.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who had failed in the team’s first two matches, got into rhythm by pulling Pandya (2/34) for consecutive fours in the 11th over. Pandya soon dismissed Imam (36), who undid his hard work by playing a loose drive outside off and edging the ball to the keeper. Replays showed Hardik offering something like a prayer before delivering the ball. Whatever it was, the desired result was achieved!
Imam’s dismissal brought in experienced in-form batter Mohammad Rizwan to the crease. He was batting on 1 when he was adjudged lbw to Jadeja (2/38) as he missed a sweep. Rizwan, however, survived as he took DRS, which showed the ball missing the stumps.
The Babar-Rizwan duo went on to consolidate Pakistan’s innings, adding 82 runs for the fourth wicket. Babar brought up his half-century and Pakistan’s 150 by hitting a low full toss from Kuldeep (2/35) through point for four.
Siraj knocks over Babar to spark Pakistan's batting collapse
Siraj got the much-needed breakthrough from India, breaching Babar’s defense on 50. The Pakistan captain wanted to run a ball that was angled in down to third man. However, he completely missed the delivery and was knocked over. Babar’s dismissal sparked a shocking batting collapse that saw the batting team go from 155/2 to 191 all out.
Kuldeep struck twice in the 33rd over. Saud Shakeel (6) missed his attempted clip and was caught in front of the stumps - India taking a smart review to overturn the original not out decision. Iftikhar Ahmed (4) then dragged a googly back onto the stumps off his gloves while attempting a sweep.
Pakistan’s chances of putting up a fighting total suffered a massive blow when Bumrah knocked over Rizwan (49) with the last ball of the 34th over. The set batter failed to spot an off-cutter and was comprehensively cleaned up.
The carnage continued as Bumrah cleaned up Shadab Khan (2) in his next over with a brute that pitched on off and seemed to straighten a bit. The ball beat Shadab’s outside edge and hit the stumps.
Mohammad Nawaz (4) then slogged Pandya to mid-on, leaving Pakistan in further trouble at 187/8 at the end of 40 overs. On the first ball of the 41st over, Hasan Ali (12) also perished trying to slog Jadeja.
The left-arm spinner wrapped up Pakistan’s innings by trapping Haris Rauf lbw for 2. India again took a smart review to get the decision in their favour.
