The group stage of the Vitality T20 Blast 2024 season concluded on Friday, July 19, with its final eight matches.

In the North Group set of fixtures, Nottinghamshire defeated Yorkshire by 28 runs at Leeds, while Birmingham Bears trounced Leicestershire by 72 runs in Birmingham. Northamptonshire overcame Lancashire in a high-scoring thriller at Manchester with a four-wicket margin, and Durham upstaged hosts Derbyshire in Derby by eight wickets and seven balls to spare.

Birmingham Bears’ 72-run win ensured they finished the North Group standings at the top of the table with 20 points from 14 games. They are followed by Northamptonshire at number two with 18 points, and Lancashire at number three with 17 points. Durham became the fourth and final team from the North Group to qualify for the quarter-finals after edging past Derbyshire in the run-chase.

Leicestershire with 14 points, Derbyshire and Yorkshire with 13 points each, and Worcestershire and wooden-spooners Nottinghamshire with eight points each were knocked out of the competition owing to their dismal run.

To round up the South Group, Sussex blanked Middlesex in Hove by nine wickets and with 22 balls to spare. Kent ravaged Surrey by 86 runs in Canterbury to snap their four-match losing streak. Already out of the quarter-finals race, Hampshire dashed Essex's ambitions by seven runs at Southampton’s Rose Bowl. Similarly, Glamorgan handed third-placed Somerset a 120-run larruping in Cardiff.

Regardless, Surrey finished at the top of the South Group points table, and they are joined by second-placed Sussex, third-placed Somerset, and fourth-ranked Gloucestershire as the other three teams to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Essex missed the race by a whisker at number five, while Glamorgan and Hampshire finished at number six and seven, respectively, despite winning their final league stage games. Middlesex with nine points and Kent with eight points occupy the final two slots on the nine-team standings.

Kiran Carlson’s 135 is the highlight of the action-packed T20 Blast day

Batting first, Nottinghamshire amassed 209/9 courtesy of a 21-ball fifty from Jack Haynes. Bowlers Luke Fletcher and Calvin Harrison later restricted Yorkshire to just 181/6 in the run-chase. In Birmingham, the hosts were boosted up to 194/5 by a Moeen Ali century before Danny Briggs and Jacob Bethell orchestrated a 72-run win for the table-toppers.

In a high-scoring thriller in Manchester, Northamptonshire overcame Lancashire’s 201 in the penultimate over largely owing to a breezy 76 from Matthew Breetzke. Durham chased down Derbyshire’s 155 with eight wickets to spare in Derby, with Alex Lees (72*) headlining the pursuit.

Chasing 160 in Hove, Sussex opener Daniel Hughes pumped out 96* from 54 balls to subject Middlesex to a nine-wicket defeat after Ollie Robinson’s impactful three-fer. Kent toppled Surrey by 86 runs courtesy of fifties from Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel Bell-Drummond and three-wicket hauls by Jaskaran Singh and Matt Parkinson.

Hampshire charted 181/5 in Southampton before John Turner restricted Essex by seven runs by picking up match-winning figures of 4/23. In Cardiff, Glamorgan mounted 243/4 off the back of a sizzling 135 from captain Kiran Carlson. Surprise hero Marnus Labuschagne later starred with the ball by picking up 5/11 to skittle Somerset for just 123.
