Charith Asalanka smashed a massive six off Bas de Leede that landed on the stadium’s roof during the 2024 T20 World Cup match between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. The match was played at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Sunday (June 16).

The power hit came in the 16th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. De Leede banged in a short delivery and Asalanka picked the length early and swiveled across to hit it with the wind as the ball sailed on to the stadium’s roof. The ball had to be replaced.

Charith Asalanka starred with the bat for SL, scoring a quickfire 46 runs off 21 balls at a strike rate of 219.05, including five sixes and one boundary.

Sri Lanka set a 202-run target for the Netherlands in the 2024 T20 World Cup

A clinical batting display helped Sri Lanka post 201/6 against the Netherlands in their last game of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Sunday. Apart from Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva chipped in with 46 (29) and 34 (26), respectively. Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews and skipper Wanindu Hasaranga stayed unbeaten on 30 (15) and 20 (6), respectively.

Logan van Beek was the leading wicket-taker for the Netherlands, picking up two wickets, while Vivian Kingma, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren and Tim Pringle bagged one wicket apiece.

At the time of writing, the Netherlands were 80/6 after 11 overs, with skipper Scott Edwards and Tim Pringle at the crease.

Sri Lanka will look to register their first win of the 2024 T20 World Cup. They lost consecutive matches against South Africa and Bangladesh by six and two wickets, respectively. Their third game against Nepal was abandoned due to rain, which led to their elimination from the ICC tournament.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, won their opening game against Nepal by six wickets but lost to South Africa and Bangladesh by four wickets and 25 runs, respectively.
