The T20 World Cup is a biennial event disturbed majorly by the COVID-19 outbreak across the world. The 2021 edition of the tournament was supposed to have taken place in India after the 2020 edition in Australia. However, due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases around the months of September and October 2020 ensured that the tournament was pushed back a couple of years.

The 2021 edition was once again hit by a similar problem in India and the event had to be shifted to the UAE and Oman. The T20 World Cup 2021 will commence on October 17 with the Final scheduled to be held on 14 November in Dubai. A total of 16 teams will be involved in deciding the champion over a period of 29 days.
The first-ever Cricket World Cup in the shortest format of the game was hosted by South Africa in 2007. Team India’s new-found captain MS Dhoni and his young team climbed great heights and won the inaugural tournament. It paved the way for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. Since then, the T20 format has seen new world champions like Pakistan (2009), England (2010), West Indies (2012 and 2016) and Sri Lanka (2014).
It is one of the rare ICC trophies that the mighty Australians have not got hold of even once. Also, this is the first-ever T20 World Cup hosted by the UAE as well as Oman.
Eight teams have been divided into two T20 World Cup groups (Group 1 and Group 2). There are two spots empty in each group. The four spots in these groups will be fought for by eight other teams that will battle it out in Round 1 and then qualify for the Super 12.
The ICC released the T20 World Cup 2021 schedule as early as the month of August. Hosts Oman will take on Papua New Guinea in the first Round 1 fixture of the tournament on 17 October 2021 at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground. The first round will see all the eight teams playing three games each to decide the four teams that will go on to the Super 12 stage.
The Super 12 stage commences on 23 October with Australia taking on South Africa in Abu Dhabi. The two semi-finals will be played on 10 and 11 November followed by the Final on 14 November in Dubai.
In Round 1, all eight teams play three matches each to qualify for the Super 12 stage. The T20 world cup format then allows each team to play every other team in their group to try and finish first or second in their respective groups. The top two teams from each group then go on to play the semi-finals with the winners then being one step away from holding the big trophy.
With the second wave of COVID-19 in India being much more disruptive than the first, the T20 World Cup had to be moved away from the country. UAE, who also hosted the IPL in 2020 and will host the second half of the IPL in 2021, have taken over the mantle to host the T20 World Cup right after the cash-rich franchise league comes to an end.
Oman, who have qualified for Round 1 of the tournament, have graciously joined in as 2021 T20 world cup host alongside UAE.
The ICC T20 World Cup venue list springs up four names - Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah, Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai and Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Al Amerat. While the first three venues will also be active during the IPL 2021 tournament preceding the T20 World Cup, the final venue is in Oman.
Till date, Sharjah has hosted 13 T20Is, Abu Dhabi 47, Dubai 61 and Al Amerat 24.
The Emirates Cricket Board is keen to get permission to allow spectators for the T20 World Cup 2021. However, there is no confirmed update on the crowd capacity permitted into the stadiums. As a result, the sale of WT20 2021 tickets has not yet commenced.
The Round 1 consists of eight teams - Oman, Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia and Sri Lanka.
The Group 1 for the Super 12 consists of Australia, South Africa, England and West Indies. Group 2 for the Super 12 consists of India, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

ICC T20 World Cup Winners of 2016, West Indies earned a pool of $1.6 million (10.65 CR INR). The total prize money for 2016 T20 World Cup stood at $10 million (66.56 CR INR). The runners-up England got $800,000 (5.32 CR INR, while the other two semi-finalist teams India and New Zealand got $400k each.
The T20 world cup prize money has increased from when the previous edition took place in 2016. The cash reward for the winners will be $3.5 million. The runners up will get a cheque of $1.5 million while the losing semi-finalists get $750,000 each. Winners of each Super 10 stage match will receive $50,000 each. Apart from this, all the participating teams will be earning $300,000 from the ICC.
The individual performance awardees will be earning $100,000.
Sri Lanka holds the record for the highest score in ICC T20 World Cup history. They scored 260/6 in 20 overs against Kenya in 2007. Seven years later, Sri Lanka bowled the Netherlands out for the lowest score in T20 World Cup history. The Dutch lost all their wickets for just 39 runs.
Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has scored the most runs in ICC T20 World Cup. He scored 1,016 runs in 31 innings, with his highest score being 100. Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi holds the record for the most wickets in the tournament’s history. The leg-spin all-rounder took 39 wickets in 34 matches.
When it comes to ICC events, the Star Sports Network has the best bid to telecast it in the Indian subcontinent and this time, it might be no different.
Star Sports is expected to be the major ICC T20 World Cup 2021 broadcast channel in India. Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2, Star Sports 1 HD and Star Sports 2 HD are expected to live telecast the amazing event unfolding in the UAE and Oman in various languages on Indian television.
