Bangladesh thumped Malaysia Women by 114 runs in Match 11 of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024 in Dambulla on Wednesday, July 24.
The outcome marked Bangladesh’s second win in succession in this tournament after their opening debacle to hosts Sri Lanka on July 20. With two wins and a defeat from three matches, Bangladesh rose to number two on the Group B points table with an NRR of 1.971. Unbeaten Sri Lanka continue to remain at the top of the four-team standings with a formidable NRR of 4.243.
Thailand occupy third slot after losing to Bangladesh earlier this week. In a bid to qualify for the semifinals, they need to defeat Sri Lanka in their final league match of the tournament. Winless Malaysia became the first team to get knocked out of the competition after succumbing to their third consecutive defeat on July 24.
Here's the updated Group B standings:
Murshida Khatun’s 80 catalyst of Bangladesh’s big win
Prior to the match, Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana won the toss and opted to bat first. Her openers Dilara Akter and Murshida Khatun staged a 65-run partnership in less than eight overs until the former was sent back from the crease by Malaysian spinner Mahirah Izzati Ismail.
Murshida marched on to list her sixth T20I half-century, smacking a career-best 80 from 59 balls with 10 boundaries and a six. She shared an 89-run stand with captain and fellow half-centurion Sultana (62* from 37 balls) for the second wicket. After Murshida fell to a tame chip off Elsa Hunter, Sultana’s boundary-laden blitz ensured Bangladesh raced to 191/2 by the completion of their 20 overs.
In pursuit of 192, Malaysia’s response fell flat at 77/8 in 20 overs, with Elsa Hunter’s mere 20 turning out to be the biggest benefactor of her team’s timid chase. Opener Wan Julia and middle-order star Mahirah Izzati Ismail were the only other batters to list double-digit scores, while eight extras amounted to more than a tenth of Malaysia’s total.
For Bangladesh, Nahida Akter finished with match-winning figures of 2/13 while Jahanara Alam, Sabikun Nahar Jesmin, Rabeya Khan, Ritu Moni and Shorna Akter all chipped in with a wicket each.
