Hosts Sri Lanka went up against Malaysia Women in Match 7 of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024 in Dambulla on Monday, July 22. Under the charismatic leadership of Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka Women won the match by a whopping 144 runs to register their second successive win in the tournament.
Sri Lanka’s massive win catapulted them to the top of the Group B points table. With two comprehensive wins in two games, their NRR stands at a staggering 4.243. Thailand Women slipped to number two while winless Bangladesh remain at number three on the four-team standings.
Malaysia Women slumped to their second consecutive trashing as their NRR crashed to -4.150 to stay at the bottom of the points table.
Chamari Athapaththu smacks career-best 119* to headline big SL win
Winning the toss and opting to bat first at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Sri Lankan captain and opener Chamari Athapaththu lost partner Vishmi Gunaratne in just the second over of the match to Suabika Manivannan.
Unfazed by the early setback, Athapaththu led Sri Lanka’s recovery with a counterattacking 64-run partnership with Harshitha Samarawickrama (26 off 23 balls). Facing 69 deliveries in the innings and smacking seven of them for sixes and 14 of them for boundaries, the Sri Lankan skipper pounded a career-best 119* to lift her team to 184/4 by the end of the 20th over.
Among the Malaysian bowlers, Winifred Duraisingam picked up two wickets in the final two balls of the innings. Mahirah Izzati Ismail also scalped a wicket during her economical four-over spell.
Chasing 185, Malaysia’s entire response folded up for just 40 in 19.5 overs. As many as nine Malaysian batters failed to list a double-list score, with four of them falling for ducks. Number three batter Elsa Hunter made 10 runs, while extras accounted for six runs to the team’s cause.
Each of the six utilized bowlers from the Sri Lankan camp ended up bagging wickets. Shashini Gimhani unfurled the spell of the match with figures of 3/9 from four overs. Kawya Kavindi and Kavisha Dilhari picked up two wickets each while Inoshi Priyadharshani, Sachini Nisansala, and Ama Kanchana also chipped in with a scalp.
