Thailand and Sri Lanka take early honors in Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024
Thailand Women, batting first, carved 133/6 from 20 overs with number three Nannapat Koncharoenkai top-scoring in the innings through her calculated 35-ball 40. Phannita Maya also listed a near run-a-ball 29 in the middle overs to defy Mahirah Izzati Ismail’s three-wicket haul.
Chasing 134, Malaysia’s response fell flat at 111/8 after 20 overs. Notably, opener Wan Julia herself accounted for 52 of those runs as the rest of the Malaysian batting line-up crumbled in front of Onnicha Kamchomphu (2/20), Chanida Sutthiruang (1/12) and Thipatcha Putthawong (1/15) to concede a 23-run win to Thailand.
In the high-octane match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Nigar Sultana’s team managed to make just 111/8 after she won the toss and opted to bat first. Captain Sultana herself punched out 48* from 59 balls after Sri Lanka’s new-ball bowlers Udeshika Prabodhani (2/20) and Inoshi Priyadharshani (2/17) decimated Bangladesh’s top order at 17/4 in less than six overs.
In response, Sri Lankan opener Vishmi Gunaratne produced a handy 48-ball 51 and number three Harshitha Samarawickrama made a valiant 33 before Nahida Akter waged Bangladesh’s lone rebellion with a fighting three-fer. The hosts eventually romped home with a seven-wicket in the 18th over of the match.
