The Pakistan cricket team find themselves in a tough situation with regard to qualification for the 2023 World Cup semi-finals following their shock loss to Afghanistan on Monday.

Babar Azam and company went down to Afghanistan by eight wickets in match number 22 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The loss was Pakistan’s first to Afghanistan in the ODI format.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan put up 282/7 on the board as skipper Babar top-scored with 74 off 92, Abdullah Shafique hit 58 off 75, while Iftikhar Ahmed slammed 40 in 27 balls. Afghanistan, however, aced the chase in 49 overs as Ibrahim Zadran (87 off 113), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65 off 53), Rahmat Shah (77* off 84) and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (48* off 45) all made significant contributions.

Despite the loss, Pakistan remain in contention for a place in the top four, but they might need help from the other teams as well. Reacting to the team’s complicated qualification scenario, a disappointed Pakistan journalist shared an amusing post on X, which went as follows:

Pakistan can still qualify for the semis if they:

- Win all their matches

- Bangladesh defeat South Africa

- India defeat Netherlands

- Afghanistan defeat Australia

- New Zealand miss their flight

- Sri Lankan players forget their passport

- England's team go to wrong stadium

- Michael Schumacher recovers from coma

- Rafael Nadal wins French Open

- Lewis Hamilton wins F1 title

- Liverpool wins Premier League

- Man Utd win Champions League

- And Joe Biden gets removed as US President
