Virat Kohli looks set to break a lot of records in 2018

Getting to 10,000 ODI runs is no mean feat. It is evident from the fact that only 11 players have achieved this milestone in their careers. It takes years of fitness and form to touch such numbers. As a result, the 10,000 club consists of all the legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara.

None of the players in 10,000 club is currently playing. But there are few players who are closing in on this landmark. All of them can be called modern day legends.

Captain cool soon to join the elite club

When it comes to records, the ex-captain of India has probably achieved everything in world cricket. So much is the talk about his captaincy that his batting is often taken for granted. An average of 51 and 9967 runs in ODI cricket tell the story.

With another 33 runs required, Dhoni looks set to enter the 10,000 club in the next series against England in July.

The run machine looks set to break records

It is nearly impossible to leave Kohli out of any record book. His numbers in ODI cricket are staggering. An average of 58 and 9588 runs put him among all time best in the business. Also, his 35 ODI centuries put him behind only behind Sachin Tendulkar. At the age of 29 and the kind of fitness he possesses, there won't be many records left when he bids an adieu to cricket.

The hunger for runs can be seen in all the three formats. He has a very good chance of eclipsing Sachin's record of ODI centuries too. A good series against England in July will see him enter the 10,000 club.

#3 AB de Villiers

When it comes to batting, the Superman from South Africa stands far apart from all other cricketers. His record does not actually show the kind of genius batsman he is. He holds an average of 53 in ODI cricket and is just 423 runs away from entering the 10,000 club.

His next series will be against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. He doesn't look too far from the elite club.

#4 Chris Gayle

The universe boss will be looking to set the record straight

With an international career spanning over 19 years and the kind of player he is, Gayle should have breached the 10,000 mark a lot earlier. The fallouts with the cricket board haven't helped his cause. Nonetheless, the universe boss has just helped his team qualify for the 2019 ICC World Cup. He will surely be looking to set the record straight. He needs another 425 runs to enter the 10,000 club.

Of late, he has been a lot of T20 cricket but with the world cup around the corner, we might see him playing more ODI cricket for the West Indies. If he plays for his national team, he surely will be there amongst the greats in the elite club.

#5 Hashim Amla

When it comes to Hashim Amla, it is almost surprising to see his staggering record. He goes nearly unnoticed as De Villiers, Kohli and Gayle take all the limelight. He is a very calm customer, who goes about his business without any fuss.

An average of 50 and a strike rate touching 90 tells the kind of asset he has been for South Africa. Although he is at some distance from 10,000 run mark, a player like him is surely going to cement his place in the elite club in the next couple of years.

Special Mention: Yuvraj Singh

This player has always been special for India. He currently has 8701 runs in ODI cricket. His fading form and the rise of youngsters have made it tough for him to make a comeback but you can never count out a player like Yuvraj. Hope we see him again in the Indian jersey.
