Birthplace: Shimla

Played for England

A well-known commentator these days, Robin Jackman, was born in Shimla, where his father was posted, on 13 August 1945. When his father lost a leg in war the following year, the Jackman family moved to England, and it was in England where Robin was introduced the game of cricket.

Jackman enjoyed a successful First-class career mainly with Surrey, and he took 1402 wickets from 399 matches. Married to a South African, Jackman also played cricket in the African nation, which caused trouble as the country had been isolated internationally because of apartheid.

Jackman had a brief international career as he made his debut at the age of 35, and later gained popularity with his commentary stints.

#7 Hanif Mohammad

Birthplace: Junagadh

Played for Pakistan

The legendary cricketer, who was the first star player of the Pakistan team, was born in Junagadh on 21 December 1934 (his brothers Sadiq, Mushtaq and Wazir, all of whom also represented Pakistan, were also born in Junagadh).

Hanif was trained by Abdul Aziz (father of Indian Test cricketer Salim Durani) and played Pakistan’s inaugural Test in 1952. He attained stardom with his knock of 337 in a Test against West Indies and a then-world record first-class score of 499. His popularity transformed cricket from an elitist sport into a mass sport in Pakistan.

#8 Asif Iqbal

Birthplace: Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh)

Played for Pakistan

Born in 1943 in Hyderabad, Asif Iqbal learnt the game of cricket in India and even played for the Hyderabad side before his family migrated to Pakistan in 1961. He is related to former India player Ghulam Ahmed and current tennis star Sania Mirza.

The all-rounder was Pakistan’s skipper in the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975 and later led them to the semifinal stage in the 1979 edition. Asif Iqbal also had a stint as an ICC Match Referee in the 1990s.

#9 Majid Khan

Birthplace: Ludhiana

Played for Pakistan

Son of Jahangir Khan, who had represented the undivided British Indian team, Majid Khan was born in Ludhiana a year before independence. Moving to Pakistan soon after, Majid began his first-class career for Lahore and made his Test debut for the national side in 1964.

Majid Khan is one of four batsmen in Test cricket history to score a century before lunch on Day 1 of a match. He achieved the feat against New Zealand at Karachi in 1976.

Legendary Pakistan captain Imran Khan is Majid Khan’s cousin, and ironically it was Imran who dropped Majid from the side, which marked the end of his career.

#10 Nasser Hussain

Played for England

The most illustrious among the India born international players in recent times, Nasser Hussain was born in Madras on 28 March 1968. His father was a cricketer and took his family to Chepauk often, which exposed him to the game.

The family moved to England in 1975 and Hussain progressed from school cricket to first-class and finally the English national side. After making his Test debut in 1990, he established himself as a regular in the team. After taking over the captaincy from Alec Stewart in 1999, Hussain impressed everyone with his leadership skills and is considered by many as the finest England captain since Mike Brearley.
