Tony Lewis was the last English cricketer to captain his side on Test Debut

Winner: India 2-1

Captain

India: Ajit Wadekar

England: Tony Lewis

The series marked India’s second Test series win on home soil against England. India had their backs to the wall when they lost the first Test match at the Kotla. Nonetheless, that didn’t curb them into submission. India came back with two thumping wins at Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Madras (now Chennai).

Farookh Engineer was the top-run getter of the series. Skipper Ajit Wadekar didn’t disappoint either, scoring 312 runs at 34.66. Indian spinners made hay with Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Bishen Singh Bedi picking up 35 and 25 wickets respectively.

England had their moments in the field. Cavalier Tony Greig mustered 382 runs at 63.66 with a top score of 148. Right arm fast medium bowler Geoff Arnold eked out 17 wickets in 4 matches.

England tour of India 1976/77

Under Tony Greig,England defeated India in a Test series on Indian soil after 44 years

Winner: England 3-1

Captain

India: Bishen Singh Bedi

England: Tony Greig

It was England’s turn to turn the table as they humbled India by 3-1 in the 5-match series. England managed a Test series win in India after 44 years. India salvaged some pride after winning a solitary Test at Bangalore, but it was all too late to make any sort of impact in the series. Tony Greig’s sharp leadership skills also helped the cause.

Dennis Amiss turned out to be the leading run scorer in the series with 417 runs at 52.12. It was left-arm orthodox bowler Derek Underwood and right-arm fast medium bowler John Lever who hammered down nails in the coffin of India’s chances in the series. They piled up 29 and 26 wickets respectively to push the Indians back.

Sunil Gavaskar was India’s primary batting mainstay as he scored 394 runs with a solitary hundred. Skipper Bishen Singh Bedi fought hard with 25 wickets, but it all turned out to be in vain.
