Newly elected BCCI President Shashank Manohar has resigned from his post, in order to continue as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman. He had succeeded Jagmohan Dalmiya in October 2015.

BCCI General Secretary Anurag Thakur said, “He retired because the new rules stated that he needed to be an independent member. Due to his affiliation with ICC as their Chairman, he had to make a choice, which he did.”

A source close to the BCCI said, “We had already planned on this, Mr Manohar had already told us that he might not be in charge from Mid May. So, we have based our plans accordingly as well.”

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court again upheld BCCI’s claim not to implement the Lodha recommendations. Judge CJI Thakur said, “All is not well with you, Why are you so apprehensive. Court to hear matter on June 29.”

According to reports, three other candidates Maharashtra’s Ajay Shirke, G Gangaraju of Andhra Pradesh and IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla are in the running to replace Manohar. However, Maharastra Cricket Association head Shirke has denied all such reports.

He said, “I know these rumours have been going on, but I can assure you that no such meeting to discuss his successor has been held. Nor have I been communicated anything of this nature.”

Gangaraju was recently elected the BCCI South zone Vice President. The 69-year old is currently heading the Andhra Pradesh Cricket association, but age isn’t on his side for a long-term replacement option.

Shukla seems to be the most likely candidate considering his experience within the association’s hierarchy. Earlier, Sportskeeda had reported that Manohar would put in his resignation in the middle of May.
