Ever since the historic 1991-92 ODI series between the two teams, India and South Africa have been close competitors in the white-ball domain, even the Proteas have a significant upper hand when it comes to overall statistics, winning 45 out of the 77 ODIs between the two sides, as opposed to India's 29.

# Virat Kohli has posted more runs in ODIs than any other batsman since the start of 2016 (after the end of the previous series between the two teams). He’s recorded a total of 2199 across his 36 innings in that time, at an average of 81.40.

Against South Africa, he has scored 711 runs from 20 games, at an average of 44.43, with a high score of 138 at Chennai in October 2015.

# Shikhar Dhawan has failed to score more than five runs in five of his last seven ODI innings on away from home. He did go on to post 49 and 132* when he did get beyond five on the other occasions, however.
