The duo of Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy held the record for the highest opening partnership for a long time before South African openers Neil McKenzie and Graeme Smith breached the landmark with an opening stand of 415 runs against Bangladesh in the 2007-08 season.

The visiting side, on the back of a win in the first game, entered the game as the favourites to win the second game and clinch a series win. Captain Smith won the toss and opted to bat first on a flat track at Chattogram as McKenzie joined forces with him to crush the Bangladeshi bowlers.

On a surface that played out for quality stroke-making, the South African openers stuck to the basics and made their way to a massive 415-run partnership that lasted for 94.3 overs, before Smith was castled by Abdur Razzak for 232. McKenzie stayed at the middle until the next session before Shahadat Hossain prized his wicket out for 226 runs.

With their opening partnership of 415 runs, McKenzie and Smith laid a platform for a big win before Dale Steyn and co. completed the formalities soon as South Africa bulldozed a tired Bangladesh side by an innings and 205 runs to complete a whitewash.
